The Problem
Maternal and neonatal mortality rates in Nigeria are among the highest globally. Maternal deaths account for 32% of all fatalities among women aged 15–49, and more than 250,000 babies die at birth each year. Many mothers and newborns do not receive adequate antenatal and postnatal support.

The Solution
Spirit Health Foundation worked with Utopian to was pilot the use of Clinitouch among 42 women across rural Akpabuyo and urban Calabar South to strengthen antenatal care (ANC) and postnatal care (PNC) support within the community.
Nurses used Clinitouch at community clinics to deliver ANC and PNC monitoring, enabling mothers and newborns to receive more proactive and connected care. The platform generated real-time risk scores, helping identify higher-risk pregnancies and postnatal complications earlier.
Doctors remotely reviewed patient data through the Clinitouch clinician portal and communicated care plans to support timely follow-up care, referrals, and treatment. This helped strengthen coordination between frontline health workers and clinicians, improving continuity of care for mothers and newborns.

Our Impact (July 2025 – June 2026
- 47.6% increase in women receiving more than the recommended 4 ANC contacts (from 49.9% to 97.5%)
- 64.8% increase in women receiving more than the recommended 4PNC contacts (from 5.5% to 70.3%)
- 144 at-risk cases detected, including 77 high-risk and 67 moderate-risk cases
- 100% at-risk cases received timely, protocol-aligned follow-up care
- ZERO severe maternal complications across the two sites
- ZERO maternal deaths during the programme period across the two sites
