Protecting mothers and newborns in Nigeria through remote care

With remote monitoring, early risk detection and preventive care we’re helping to save lives of women and newborn babies in Nigera.

June 25, 2026

In Nigeria, maternal and neonatal mortality rates remain among the highest in the world, with too many women and newborns unable to access antenatal and postnatal care due to barriers in reaching facilities.

We partnered with Utopian Consulting International, Clinitouch, Stanbic Bank & Cross River State Primary Healthcare Development Agency in rural Akpabuyo and urban Calabar South to address this challenge through Clinitouch remote monitoring, early risk detection and preventive care.

Starting with a cohort of 40 women, results have been very promising in expanding vital antenatal and postnatal care, and protecting lives.

These are the headlines:

📈 Average antenatal care (ANC) contacts increased by 111%, reaching 6.02 contacts per woman
📈 Coverage of at least 4 ANC contacts rose from 49.9% to 97.5%
📈 Average postnatal care (PNC) contacts increased by 250%, reaching 3.5 contacts per woman
📈 Coverage of at least 4 PNC contacts increased from 5.5% to 70.3%

50% of all monitored cases were identified as moderate- or high-risk and were triaged for early intervention and preventive care. While recognising this is a small cohort, during the 12-month period this contributed to:

✅ Zero maternal deaths
✅ Zero severe maternal complications
✅ A 19.1% reduction in neonatal mortality compared with baseline
✅ Significant improvements in respectful maternity care

Many more mothers and newborns need this support.

We’re determined at Spirit Health Foundation to mobilise partners and resources to bring this vital preventive care to the women and babies who need it most.
